My Audience Profile

The media that i consume is quite varied...as i liked to buy and wear designer, mainstreams products, however i am not afraid to try my own thing be classed as the individual, to a certain extent i also see myself as a succeeder as although i do not possess as much status as others i feel very much in control and powerful whic, however i am always looking to go higher and therefore fall into the aspirer category.....as a mixture of the demographics i make up a special hybrid demographic of my own.

Here are some examples of the media texts and general products i consume that enable me to enter each of the different categories........

My thoughts on the ITV Media Story.....

Having a 4 year old brother, I seem to find myself watching a lot of childrens TV, especially after school times on ITV's childrens broadcast CITV and over the years i have seen a massive decrease in the amount of time CITV is broadcast for and to me it seems a strange decision to cut the time and make it even shorter. Ill leave you with some food for thought.......CITV starts at 3.20pm the other day I came home at 4.00pm and Heartbeat was on, now how much shorter do they want to make the childrens TV broadcasting time?
Auteur Theory

Auteur theories are film directors that have leave particulars traits in each of there films almost like trademarks signally their participation in the movie. One of the most famous auteurs was Alfred Hitchcock. The theory was developed in France during the 1940's. The word 'auteur' means 'author' in French and the plural auteurs means 'men of cinema'. Most auteurs show the following qualities or skills:

a strong visual and technical style, and seek to produce an accomplished mise-en-scene.

often re-visit a thematic or ideological issue throughout their work.

work has a certain artistic depth that can be uncovered through repeated viewings and study.

The director I will be looking at in a more detail to establish whether or not they are an auteur is Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is a famous director of global hits such as 'Kill Bill' (2003), 'Sin City' (2005) and 'Pulp Fiction' (1994).

'Kill Bill' (2003) is a film that pays homage to kung fu movies and violence, it boasts a female protagonist in the form of Uma Thurman. Similarly in Pulp Fiction Uma Thurman plays the main lady which, gives her role in Tarantino films a strong consistency which suggests his right to be called an auteur. Uma Thurman roles in Tarantino's films shows him as a person his doesn't seem to be in favor of a patriarchal society, as he portrays Uma Thurman as a strong, powerful woman in the two films, who doesn't just use her sexuality to get what she wants. The consistent theme of violence is also ever present in the two films as we see explicit and gory scenes of violence, which seems to promote his personal love for Kung Fu and Gangster movies. Tarrantino also has a consistent use of sound in the two films, not just any sound put a soundtrack that seems to juxtapose with the sequences its combined with.

Another production of Quentin Tarantino's that could enable him to be classed as an auteur is 'Sin City' (2005), although this is a film noir he still manages to leave his traits all over the film, the main 'baddies' in the film are a gang of powerful, rebellious women, which once again shows Tarantino challenging stereotypes and giving the power to women. Also the ever present explicit violence which can also be seen in Pulp Fiction and Kill Billl allows me to come to the conclusion the Tarantino has been successful in his attempt to become an auteur.

Audience Profiling

Here are the demographics that media audiences are split up into....

Mainstreamers:
This is the largest group. They are concerned with stability and security, mainly buying well named brands and consuming mainstream texts.

Aspirers:
Aspirers are seeking to improve themselves. They tend to define themselves by the high status brand names which they own and consume, absorbing the ideologies of the products as their own and believing that their status is established by thios conspicuous consumption.

Succeeders:
These are people who feel secure and in control-generally, they are in positions of power, although they may not be. They buy brands which reinforce their feelings of control and power.

Reformers:
Are idealists who actively consume exo friendly products and buy brands which are environmentally supportive and healthy. They buy products which establish this 'caring and responsible' ideology.

Individual:
The individual is an addition to these four basic groups, the individual is highly media literate, expects high production advertising and buys product image, not product, requiring high profile, sophisticated campaigns.
ITV requests cut in kids' output

ITV has submitted an official request to Ofcom asking for its commitment to children's programming on flagship channel ITV1 to be drastically reduced.

The media regulator has confirmed the broadcaster has submitted a paper setting out proposals to cut children's output on ITV from the current level of eight hours a week.
"We have received a written request from ITV to reduce its children's programming obligations," said a spokeswoman. "The level is currently set at eight hours, which ITV sets itself in its statement of programme policy, but it needs to consult Ofcom if the level significantly changes."

She said the media regulator would consider ITV's request in the autumn.
The broadcaster is believed to want to cut its children's output on ITV1 to as little as two hours a week by removing all programming from ITV1's weekday schedule to only leave a weekend presence.

A spokesman for ITV said the broadcaster would not comment on its consultations with Ofcom.
Earlier this month, the ITV controller of children's programming, Estelle Hughes, resigned as the scale of the broadcaster's cutbacks in the genre became clear.
Ms Hughes oversees the commissioning of children's programming for both ITV1 and the CiTV digital channel.

The broadcaster has also announced it is to sell off its in-house children's production unit.
